Community Risk Reduction Week




JANUARY 15-21, 2024

WHEREAS, communities serve as the cornerstone for the state of North Dakota and its citizens, and these communities can be affected by unexpected catastrophes; and

WHEREAS, the risks that affect communities can be alleviated through education from local fire departments, strengthened building codes, increased awareness of the signs of risk, installing sprinkler systems in new and existing buildings and other innovative actions; and

WHEREAS, to prevent future emergencies there is a Community Risk Reduction Program implemented by local fire departments to use data to safeguard communities by prioritizing the most pertinent local risks and strategically investing resources to produce positive effects which prevent incidents from occurring or, in failed circumstances, mitigate the impact of an emergency; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Dakota and the State Fire Marshal are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our state; and

WHEREAS, raising awareness about ways to reduce the risk of unexpected emergencies benefits the communities’ ability to prepare, adapt and overcome emergencies when they do arrive; and

WHEREAS, the State Fire Marshal practices and promotes effective ways to reduce the risk of unexpected emergencies in communities through the exercise of the Five E’s: education, engineering, enforcement, economic incentives and emergency response; and

WHEREAS, most fire-related and medical calls for service are preventable with an integrated Community Risk Reduction program educating civilians on the Five E’s; and

WHEREAS, Community Risk Reduction begins with awareness at the most local levels through the cooperation of community leaders and citizens.

NOW, THEREFORE, as Governor of the State of North Dakota, I do hereby proclaim January 15-21, 2024, COMMUNITY RISK REDUCTION WEEK in the State of North Dakota.
