Southern Valley Fire & Rescue
Position: Volunteer
Scope

The firefighter serves a member of a team to carry out fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials, emergency medical response. As well as fire prevention, inspection and education. The firefighter will also perform various maintenance activities on station facilities, fire equipment and apparatus.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to both emergency and non-emergency calls including but not limited to medical injuries and illnesses, Fires both structural and wildland, Hazardous materials response at the operations level, technical rescue to include high and low angle and confined space, vehicle extrication, water/ice rescue. Carrying out specific assigned duties not limited to emergency vehicle driving and operating, providing BLS as an EMR/EMT according to medical protocol, connecting hoses, positioning ladders, operating both hand and power tools.
  • Conduct annual fire safety inspections of public buildings and commercial businesses as directed by the community

  • Conduct pre-plan visits and information gathering as directed by the community risk reduction division
  • Performs basic buildings and grounds maintenance at fire stations
  • Performs equipment checks and maintain them to a constant state of readiness
  • Maintains personal protective gear, completes inspections of gear and requests repair or replacement as needed
  • Participates in and conducts training exercises, instructs and demonstrates skills to prepare for emergency situations
  • Interact with public, city administration, district board members and township boards in a professional and courteous manner to maintain working relationships with all above
  • Give station tours, take apparatus to schools, and other public education activities and community outreach events as needed
  • Work safely, follows all safe work practices, follows all standard operating guidelines and procedures, reports unsafe work conditions to supervisor

Demands and Conditions

Work involves response to unpredictable emergency situations. Such that there will be prolonged periods of heavy physical exertion without benefit of meals, hydration, scheduled rest times, or warm ups/cool downs. Firefighters will be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, traffic accidents, emotional and visual trauma. While wearing PPE (personal protective equipment) including SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) firefighters must perform firefighting tasks such as hose line operation, carrying and lifting heavy objects, roof and wall ventilation. As well as rescue operations to include but not limited to dragging up to 200 lbs. a minimum of 50 feet, occasional lifting pushing pulling of up to 100 lbs., and frequent lifting, pushing, pulling up to 50 lbs. and regular lifting pushing pulling of 20lbs. work will be performed under stressful conditions such as working in hot and cold environments, work at height or below grade for prolonged periods of time.

There can be very high levels of mental and emotional stress caused by the requirement to fight fires in an effective manner, the requirement to maintain absolute control in dangerous and hectic situations and by the possibility of loss of life, injury and property.

Working Environment
  • Regular exposure to the following conditions but not limited to:
  • Biohazardous materials: blood, body fluids, etc.
  • Fumes, smoke, fire, hazardous/caustic chemicals
  • Extreme hot and cold, slippery conditions, snow, rain, dirt, mud
  • High noise and vibration environments
  • Dangerous roadways, work at height and below grade

Requirements:

  • Valid drivers license appropriate to the class of vehicle being operated
  • Strong communication skills both orally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain and create effective working relationships with peers, superiors, other city and township departments, vendors, contractors, etc.
  • Be able to pass a criminal background check
